pierced ears!

zoe got her ears pierced!

she & i got back from Atlanta last night; i was picking her up after two weeks with my parents. she has been asking for about six months to get her ears pierced. in March, i went to the tattoo/piercing studio that my family frequents, but they didn't pierce under 12. i got my left ear pierced again & asked a bunch of questions about why, age restrictions, etc. i was told to ask the owner about making an exception, but we did not have the time to talk to her then. since i was going to be in town, i enlisted my dad - since he knows the owner.

it must have been in the cards for yesterday, because we walked in right when they opened, & she was there. we asked, & she said ok for us - since she knew my dad. i should also point out that my dad has known her for at least 10 years now & has been a frequent customer at the tattoo shop. she showed us around the shop & then left. so if we had arrived even ten minutes later than we had, zoe wouldn't have gotten her ears pierced that day.

the piercer, Josh, was the same one who pierced my ear & i was glad for that, as my piercing didn't hurt. zoe picked out some gorgeous little opal fronts for her barbells. she was very well-behaved & didn't even flinch when each needle went through. later, she told me it didn't hurt at all, just felt like a pinch.

i got my ring replaced with a flat-backed barbell - i'm sure the jewelry has a proper name; i just don't know it. my ear already feels lighter, & i can sleep on that side without it hurting. olive will be less likely to catch on it when she headbutts me or hugs me now. it was having trouble healing because she kept catching it & making it bleed.

anyways, i am really happy she was able to go to Virtue & Vice & get her ears pierced there. i know that she has a low pain tolerance, & i wasn't very happy with the idea of piercing guns. so far, we have cleaned our piercings together twice, & she says they don't hurt at all. the piercer told her that she handled it better than most adults who come in.

so proud!

seems odd to me - not piercing under 12 merely increases the number of kids who have to head down to the cheap as mall stores and have some 16 year old use the gun on them. Seems rather silly to me, when the parents are right there...

when i asked about it, i was told that it could be a traumatic experience, which i thought odd because i would think that the piercing gun going off by your ear would be more startling than a silent needle. i am not sure what they [i am assuming the AAP] mean by 'traumatic', but i am so glad that it happened this way rather than the other way.

... the piercing gun is -definitely- more traumatic. Yikes.

Thing 1 hits 13 this fall, but I think TX has a "not under 18" bit on piercing, which will suck. She wants her ears done badly, but I loathe the guns, and would much rather have her ears pierced properly.

I hadn't even though about the flat-backed barbells. I love you! I've got two cartilege holes that I don't really want rings in, but hate the backs sticking out and getting caught on everything. Ooo, I know where I'm going tomorrow!

yea, i don't wear stud earrings just because i hate being poked by the backs. i wasn't sure the piercer would recommend a flat-backed barbell, but when i asked about it, he had no objections. he picked out the smallest one too, which really helps. my ear feels tons lighter. it hasn't hurt once since.

My top two holes, the earrings get caught on everything, including my glasses. And my hair is so short that it's always caught in them, which means hoops wouldn't help either. The flat back ... now that's just -perfect-.

I'm so glad they went ahead and allowed your little one to get her ears done right. The gun =is= scary, between the noise, and a heck of a lot more pain.

thanks! she was pretty nervous, but the piercer was so nice to her & kept her talking about school & whatnot that she was at ease after no time.
